Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Red Seal exam guide
Study the current exam basis while keeping the official transition between the previous standard and the newer standard under development clear.
1. Start with the official exam basis
The official trade page currently says the previous occupational standard remains the basis for current exams while exams based on the newer standard are under development. The current exam has 125 questions. Recheck that transition and your provincial or territorial authority before your sitting; do not assume a newer weighting page has already replaced the current exam.
The current 125-question allocation shown here follows the previous-standard exam basis used by the app. Maintenance and service is the largest area, while installation, commissioning and routine activities remain substantial.

Priority: Organize weak answers by system state: installation, evacuation and charging, commissioning, airflow, controls, or service diagnosis. Then practise the measurements that separate look-alike symptoms.
2. Practise all three question styles
Expect questions that require recall, correct procedure and diagnosis. For HVAC/R, the difficult step is often deciding which measurement comes next and whether the evidence points to airflow, heat transfer, charge, restriction, control or component failure.
- Draw the refrigeration cycle and label expected pressure, temperature and state changes.
- Calculate superheat or subcooling only after identifying the correct measurement points and operating condition.
- Separate an airflow symptom from a refrigerant-side symptom before adjusting charge.
- State the safety, environmental and code check that must happen before the technical step.
3. Follow the cycle, then test the branch
The app combines cycle views, superheat and subcooling tools, conversions and fault sequences so readings remain tied to a system model.

- Confirm operating mode, load, airflow and safe test conditions.
- Map temperatures, pressures and control states to the refrigeration cycle.
- Use the smallest next test that separates charge, restriction, heat-transfer, control and component causes.
4. Turn your results into a seven-day cycle
- Day 1: diagnostic and weakness ranking.
- Days 2–4: targeted practice in the two weakest areas.
- Day 5: timed mixed set.
- Day 6: review errors and technical sources.
- Day 7: full mock or targeted review, then build the next plan.
5. Correct the mistakes that cost marks
- Adding or removing refrigerant before verifying airflow, load and stable operating conditions.
- Using the wrong saturation temperature or measurement point in a superheat or subcooling calculation.
- Treating a control response as a failed component without checking inputs, safeties and sequence.
- Using a newer standard weighting as the current exam allocation before the official transition is complete.
